A new study in the Journal of Experimental Medicine shows that Merck’s once highly touted HIV vaccine candidate ultimately failed because of an antibody attack on the common-cold virus that was used as a vehicle to transport key HIV genes into the body. That antibody attack may have altered the immune system’s response to the vaccine, making it more likely -- not less -- for HIV infection to occur. Trials of the vaccine were stopped in September 2007 when data showed it boosts HIV infection risks.

Latino immigrants, especially the undocumented, are notoriously difficult to reach with HIV information and services. But we'd better figure out how to better serve this population -- and quickly -- experts warn. Although Latinos represent only 13% of the U.S. population, they account for 19% of new AIDS diagnoses and 19% of all U.S. AIDS cases. They have an AIDS case rate more than three times that of whites, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Arnold Schwarzenegger signed into law a bill that bans restaurants in the state from using virtually all trans fats, which are found in most margarines and oils.
